Plus Size Art

"Size L"

I have always appreciated art and the way it can express so much. It wasn't until a few years ago that I saw an art piece that displayed plus size women. In general I believe plus size representation is important, but never did I think seeing a girl who looks like me in an art piece would bring me such joy. The piece that sparked my interest for plus size art was the piece "Size L" from (Guandong Big Girls Series #3, 1995) by the artist Wang Yunpeng.

A few weeks ago my sister came across an Instagram page and told me to check it out. This Instagram page was artist Paloma Demanet's page. On her Instagram I immediately loved her work, she painted beautiful curvy girls for the world to see. She was so kind as to let me ask her a few questions about her work:

How and why did you start painting?

Paloma: I have always done art since I was a little kid. But I started painting more seriously maybe about 5 years ago when I realized I was actually pretty good at it.

What do you want people to take from your art?

Paloma: Anything they can, anything they see, and anything they feel.

How does your body image journey influence your paintings?

Paloma: Well now that I'm actually starting to accept and love my body more, I'm starting to paint it. I never used to wanna look at my body... so it's a big step for me.

What do you think about plus size representation in art?

Paloma: Awesome!! More representation of everything is always good.

What is your message to girls/women who deal with a negative body image?

Paloma: Fuck what society is telling you to look like!! Everybody is beautiful in their own way. No matter how cliche it sounds, it's true. Tell yourself you're beautiful everyday. Might be hard to believe at first, but nothing is ever easy.

What feedback have you received since making your paintings public?

Paloma: Sooooo much positive feedback from so many different girls. Most of them saying that it helped them see that their big bodies can be beautiful too.

(Paloma is a very talented artist so go give her some love on her Instagram: @palomadelaghetto. Visit her website as well: palomademanet.bigcartel.com Click the image above to check out her site!)

Women like Paloma inspire me to keep the conversation of plus size representation going. Her art pieces alone had girls messaging her saying that her art made them accept their bodies. Even if it was a small step to self love, it still was influenced by Paloma's art.

Body image acceptance is one hell of a journey, which is why I hope these images inspire you to love your body as well. If the media isn't showing you that who you are is beautiful, show them.

Love Always,

Perla
